An Elevated Work Platform (EWP) licence is a formal qualification required to operate specific types of machinery used to work at heights, such as boom lifts and scissor lifts. These machines are essential in industries like construction, maintenance, warehousing, and landscaping. The licence ensures operators possess the necessary skills and knowledge to handle the equipment safely and in compliance with Queensland’s stringent safety regulations.
In Queensland, operating elevated work platforms above a certain height, particularly boom lifts exceeding 11 meters, is classified as high-risk work. Under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld), anyone performing high-risk tasks must obtain a High-Risk Work (HRW) licence through accredited training. This requirement is not merely a bureaucratic hurdle—it is a crucial measure to ensure workplace safety. Queensland’s safety standards aim to minimise the risks associated with working at heights, a leading cause of workplace injuries and fatalities. By obtaining an EWP licence, operators demonstrate their ability to work safely and efficiently, contributing to a safer environment for everyone on-site.
Queensland’s Work Health and Safety Act 2011 outlines strict guidelines for operating elevated work platforms. These laws place a significant emphasis on training, compliance, and safety, ensuring that all operators are adequately prepared to handle the challenges associated with high-risk equipment. Employers are legally obligated to verify that all workers operating EWPs hold the appropriate licence, with heavy penalties for non-compliance.
Adhering to these regulations not only prevents legal issues but also fosters a culture of safety. Licensed operators are better equipped to identify potential hazards, follow safety protocols, and respond effectively to emergencies.
