An Elevated Work Platform (EWP) licence is a formal certification required to operate machinery such as boom lifts, scissor lifts, and other equipment used for work at height. These platforms are essential for industries like construction, maintenance, warehousing, and arboriculture. An EWP licence ensures that operators have the skills and knowledge needed to handle this equipment safely and efficiently, reducing workplace risks. In Queensland, the operation of elevated work platforms, particularly those with boom lengths exceeding 11 meters, is classified as high-risk work. Therefore, obtaining a High-Risk Work (HRW) licence is mandatory under Queensland laws to ensure compliance and safety.
Operating elevated work platforms involves risks such as falls, equipment failure, and improper handling. Queensland enforces strict safety regulations to minimise these hazards. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) mandates that workers in high-risk environments, including those operating EWPs, must hold valid licences. An EWP licence provides operators with training in hazard identification, safety protocols, and emergency response, ensuring that workplaces remain safe and compliant.
Failure to comply with Queensland’s safety regulations can result in severe consequences, including hefty fines and legal penalties for both operators and employers. Employers are responsible for ensuring that all operators have the required certification, and unlicensed operation of EWPs can lead to worksite shutdowns or accidents. By adhering to the regulations, individuals and businesses demonstrate their commitment to safety, professionalism, and legal compliance.
